ANTIOXIDANTS AND YOUR HEART

Many people are unaware of the importance of antioxidants. They help your body neutralize oxidation and the effects of free radicals that have been implicated in aging as well as in compromising cardiovascular health. Antioxidants mop up free radicals that have accumulated in your body as a result of pollution, tobacco smoke, ultraviolet light, radiation as well as the normal byproducts of cellular energy production. In the body, bioflavonoids enhance vitamin C absorption and help maintain collagen and capillary walls. In addition to benefiting the cardiovascular system, they also aid in the body’s immune–defense system. The flavonoids in hawthorn berries provide potent antioxidants to protect your heart. In addition hawthorn flavonoids help keep blood vessels clear of plaque buildup and also relax and dilate blood vessels. Hawthorne increases blood flow to the arteries in your heart.

The antioxidant value of foods and supplements is determined by the ORAC value – it stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity. Some powerful antioxidants are found in green tea leaves, turmeric used in Indian food, wolfberry (also called gogi fruit), sea buckthorn, red grapes, grape seeds, grape skins, quercetin, resveratrol, apple extract, açai berry extract, raspberries, blueberries, and selenium. Studies indicate that resveratrol has benefits for your heart and may answer the French Paradox of low incidence of heart problems despite their high fat consumption. Resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes and thus red wine may help inhibit the aggregation of platelets. Garcinia or mangosteen fruit from Thailand is loaded with xanthones that support your cardiovascular and immune systems. Lutein and lycopene are carotenoid antioxidants, meaning they’re found in pale yellow to bright orange to deep red vegetables and fruits. Bioflavonoids contribute to the bright colors of fruits and vegetables. Vitamin K2 helps keep the arteries clear and thus supports circulation that is already within a normal range. K2 regulates calcium in the body by keeping it in the bones and out of the arteries.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants that is used by the plant to capture energy from the sun needed in the photosynthesis process. Chlorophyll is chemically similar to human blood. The difference is that its central atom is magnesium and human blood’s is iron. The benefits of consuming liquid chlorophyll are many, including cleansing of your blood which can only help your cardiovascular system. It also improves your immune response. Kurt or Anne will now tell you about another basic nutrient for a healthy heart that many people don’t know about.

RISK FACTORS FOR YOUR CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

The health of the cardiovascular system is oftentimes compromised by such risk factors as the following:

• Smoking
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Diabetes.
• Obesity
• Physical inactivity

Some types of heart disease can be controlled and even prevented; however, others are due to infections, inheritance or other uncontrollable factors. Did you know that approximately 700,000 of Americans die from heart disease each year? That accounts for nearly one-third of all deaths in the U.S. deaths. Even people in their 20’s are at risk for heart disease. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DO YOU KNOW THE FOLLOWING FACTS?

• The human heart beats about 100,000 times each day (about 35 million per year).
• At rest, the heart works twice as hard as the leg muscles of a person sprinting.
• The heart circulates approximately six quarts of blood through the entire body three times every minute.
• An adult’s heart is about the size of two fists.

Fortunately, you can reduce or prevent most heart disease by making healthy lifestyle choices that include daily exercise, not smoking, prudent eating, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing alcohol consumption. Additionally, certain nutritional products can help you support your cardiovascular system health. Here are some of the major ones. Many of you probably take vitamin and mineral supplements. Good health, including cardiovascular health, is achieved through nutrition. Vitamins and minerals can supply busy people with the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals that can be difficult to get from your diets when you’re on-the-go or older and find it difficult to eat the proper quantities of food. And don’t forget you need extra amounts of B-vitamins that are depleted by physical and other stresses. Basic nutrients are essential for the optimal function of your heart as well as the rest of your body.
